Coconut di-ethanolamide is a coconut derivative and is used as a cleaner, foam stabilizer and viscosity (thickness) controller. It too is very mild and gentle to the skin.
These three detergents combine to form a very concentrated, high-foaming, mild detergent system with excellent cleaning capabilities. They are also surfactants, acting as emulsifiers, solubilizers and wetting agents. A surfactant molecule has an oil-soluble (hydrophobic) portion at one end, and a water-soluble (hydrophillic) portion at the other. This enables the surfactant to surround the oil, and have its hydrophobic portion in the oil, and its hydrophillic portion in the water. This is how it suspends oil in water, which we know as emulsification.
Surfactants also act to reduce the surface tension of water. Surface tension is the reluctance of water molecules to break apart.
The three surfactants in LDC dramatically reduce the surface tension in the water, making the water ”wetter”. In practical use, LDC easily penetrates the dirt, and quickly begins to emulsify and solubilize it. When some mechanical action (such as scrubbing) is added, the dirt is lifted off the surface of the dish or fabric and becomes totally entrapped in the cleaning water.
